Emergency dental problems rarely happen at convenient times. If you break a tooth or lose a filling at night, it can be stressful and painful. At Kutanovski Dental in Crown Point, we want our patients to know what to do until they can see a dentist.
What should I do first if I break a tooth at night?
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area. If there is bleeding, apply light pressure with gauze or a clean cloth. Save any broken pieces of the tooth if possible and bring them to your dentist.
What if I lose a filling while eating?
If a filling falls out, keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. You can use dental cement (available at most pharmacies) as a temporary measure until you see your dentist.
Is it safe to wait until morning?
If there is severe pain, swelling, or bleeding that won’t stop, call an emergency dentist right away. If the damage is minor and you’re not in pain, it may be safe to wait until the next day—just avoid chewing on the tooth.
What can I do for the pain?
Over-the-counter pain relievers, a cold compress on the outside of your cheek, or numbing gels can help reduce discomfort. Never place aspirin directly on the tooth—it can burn your gums.
Can a broken tooth or missing filling get worse if I wait?
Yes. Exposed areas of the tooth are vulnerable to further breakage or infection. Even if you’re not in pain, call your emergency dentist in Crown Point as soon as possible for an appointment.
